Woodblock Printing Workshop
experience the great inventions in modern time
Woodblock printing has long fallen out of everyday use, but this heritage craft reminds us of a centuries-old invention, offering a moment of retrospect in our fast-paced modern lives. It’s a great fit for special occasions like Lunar New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, or ESEA Heritage Month. It can be a quick, simple craft to add to your event — just inking and printing. We can also design and hand-carve a bespoke pattern of your choosing, to make your corporate event feel even more special. We can run the workshop at any scale, with a full team of instructors on hand. Send us your request below!
Woodblock Printing Workshop In London
how to organise?
format
Our woodblock printing workshop is often offered as one of the activities within a festive celebration — guests ink and press pre-carved blocks onto paper or cards, a simple, satisfying craft that takes just minutes to pick up. If you’d like something more bespoke, we can also design and hand-carve a custom pattern or logo especially for your event, so guests print something unique to the occasion. Our in-house instructors are qualified teachers experienced in guiding complete beginners through inking and printing techniques.
price
We typically quote for the whole event rather than a set fee per person for woodblock printing alone — our standard pre-carved designs keep it low-cost. Bespoke hand-carved patterns or logos are quoted separately, based on design complexity.
set up
We bring everything needed to set up your space for woodblock printing — for example, pre-carved blocks, ink, brayers and paper, ready to go. All materials included.
DURATION
From our experience, each person spends around 10–20 minutes exploring the art of woodblock printing when it’s offered alongside other activities.
Why choose us?
who we are
We’re cultural educators at heart, and craft teachers by trade. Dear Asia workshops exist to share ESEA heritage in a way people can actually feel — through their hands, not just a slideshow. It’s the same care and pride that goes into every workshop and event, whatever the craft.
not just craft
Our workshops work for every skill level — instructors give hands-on help throughout, so everyone leaves with a finished piece they’re proud of. But the craft is only half of it. Underneath is the story: the festivals, beliefs and traditions that ESEA communities have carried for generations, and that we bring to life in the room with you.
one stop shop event partner
Our full time team are experienced event organisers. We bring together event facilitators and craft instructors, so you don’t need to source multiple suppliers yourself. On the day, we handle setup, materials and introductions end to end — you just need to book the room.
Centuries ago…
Woodblock printing is one of China’s Four Great Inventions, with origins dating back to the Tang Dynasty — the world’s oldest dated printed book, the Diamond Sutra, was made this way in 868 CE. Each design is carved in reverse into a wooden block, inked, then pressed onto paper by hand, producing bold, graphic prints once used to spread text and images across the empire.
