ABOUT

Kintsugi beginner workshop: done the Japanese way

Kintsugi is more than a technique—it offers a glimpse into the Japanese way of seeing the world, shaped by the humble beauty of wabi-sabi. This traditional aesthetic embraces imperfection and transience, finding quiet elegance in the worn, the weathered, and the broken. It reflects a deep cultural humbleness—an acceptance of flaws, rather than a need to hide them.

After trying several Kintsugi workshops in London, we felt something was missing—depth, cultural context, and intention. So the Japanese team at Dear Asia set out to design our own. Alongside the craft itself, you’ll learn simple Japanese phrases, the philosophy of wabi-sabi, and the everyday Japanese way of life that shapes it, including etiquette, mindfulness and the beauty of imperfection. It’s the part most Kintsugi classes leave out, and it’s what turns an afternoon of mending into something meaningful.

The Very Japanese Kintsugi Workshop by Dear Asia is a beginner-friendly Kintsugi class in London, held in small groups with one instructor to every six guests. You’ll mend a ceramic piece with gold, so no experience is needed, and you’ll leave with a finished piece and a new way of seeing imperfection.

Mend with gold, mindfully and beautifully

Kintsugi with Japanese language and culture

Personal guidance: 1 instructor to 6 guests

WHAT TO EXPECT

On the day of your Kintsugi class

Follow our story book

Start with simple Japanese greetings and etiquette to connect with the humility of Japanese culture. Our instructor will guide you through our story book to explore the history and philosophy of Kintsugi and the idea of wabi-sabi: seeing beauty in humble or broken forms.

A Taste of Japan

Enjoy a taste of Japan with Japanese tea and treats, chosen by our Japanese instructors to set a calm, mindful mood for the craft ahead.

Give it a crack

We give an ordinary shop-bought ceramic a second life by making clean, intentional cracks, which we later mend with gold. The result is a unique piece to treasure.

Hands-On Crafting

Our instructor guides you step by step, so no one is left behind. With only one instructor to every six guests, you get plenty of personal attention as we create something beautiful that’s yours alone.

FAQS

What you might want to know

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with gold, treating the cracks as part of the object’s story. It reflects the philosophy of wabi-sabi, finding beauty in imperfection. You can read more in our guide to Kintsugi for wellbeing.

Traditional Kintsugi mends ceramics with urushi, a natural Japanese lacquer that is food safe once cured. It needs a long curing time and the right temperature and humidity, and even the at-home versions can take a month or more.

Our studio version uses a fast-setting epoxy instead, so you can finish your piece in just 2 hours and take it home the same day. The bond is strong and permanent, but it is not food safe or heat resistant. We recommend displaying your piece as a decorative item, not using it for food, drinks or the microwave.

You will learn two Kintsugi techniques and apply the one that suits your piece. You can bring a meaningful broken item of your own or choose from the ceramics we provide. All materials are included. Please note, repaired pieces are for display only and shouldn’t be used for food or drink.

All tickets are sold through Eventbrite, from £50 per person. You can cancel or reschedule for free up to 7 days before your session. Within 7 days, you can reschedule only, or you’re welcome to gift your ticket to someone else. Eventbrite charges a small processing fee, which is not refundable.

Complete beginners are very welcome and no experience is needed. We can’t accommodate plus ones or pets, and guests must be 15 or over. With epoxy, gold dust, hammers and cracked ceramics around, we can’t guarantee a risk-free space for little ones.

Running late? Send us a quick email so we know you’re on your way. If you need help on the day, call our office on 020 3637 2335.

Wear your normal clothes. We provide protective gear. Try to avoid dark colours though, because if accidents happen, the gold dust will show!

Yes, your safety matters to us. Ceramics are broken in a controlled way using protective wrapping, and instructors supervise all breaking and gluing. We use adhesive in small amounts, provide disposable gloves, give a clear safety briefing at the start, and have hand wipes and washing facilities on site.
